Madeira Sunrise + Hiking Tours

Can you imagine yourself enjoying the sun rising up above a sea of clouds? This is the best description for this amazing experience in Madeira.

The sunrise in Madeira is one of the best things you can do when you are visiting the island. The moment when we move from the tranquility of the night to the bustle of the day, is both magical and natural.

Increasingly, both the locals and the people who visit us, want to witness this wonderful moment and that is why since 2010 we have decided to introduce a sunrise tour in our activities.

In a more intimate environment, since this is a private service, we offer a combo of sunrise tour with a hike/ Levada, which allows our guests to not only enjoy this event, but also discover and explore the most beautiful corners of our island, walk on our levadas, climb to the highest peak of Madeira (Pico Ruivo, 1862m) or even visit the eastern most side of the island (Ponta de São Lourenço).

You can choose between one of our proposals:

COMBO 1 (Sunrise experience + Ponta de São Lourenço)

Located in Caniçal, Ponta de São Lourenço is the easternmost area of the island of Madeira and is one of the most beautiful places to watch the sunrise. Let yourself be enchanted by the beautiful landscapes of the north and south coast while watching the dawn of a new day. After the sunrise we proceed to the beginning of the walk in Ponta de São Lourenço.

This walk has an approximate duration of 3:30 and is a moderate level. Along the way you can observe several species of plants of the island (138 species identified, 31 unique to the island).

When arriving at the end of the route enjoy and dive in the crystal-clear waters of the “Cais do Sardinha” or take the opportunity to rest and relax before returning. The return is done by the same route or by boat.

COMBO 2 ( Sunrise Experience + Pico do Areeiro/ Pico Ruivo)

Going up to the 3rd highest peak of the island, Pico do Areeiro, located at 1818 meters of altitude, we find the Miradouro do Juncal. From here, besides being able to observe the beautiful sunrise, we observe the eastern part of the island, Ponta de São Lourenço, the highest peak of the island, Pico Ruivo and, weather permitting, the island of Porto Santo. This is for sure one of the most amazing spots to see a sunrise in Madeira Island.

After watching the sunrise, get ready for a challenging walk, about 10km, only advisable to people with physical preparation, because there is a lot of unevenness and do not have vertigo.

The route from Pico do Areeiro to Pico Ruivo is one of the most challenging, but also the most beautiful, with landscapes over almost the entire island, especially at the top of Pico Ruivo (1862m). Here you can also see some species of birds endemic to Madeira, such as Bisbis and Tentilhão.

After the ascent to Pico Ruivo, the return route takes us to Achada do Teixeira where the walk ends. On the way back to the hotel, you will have the opportunity to visit the typical triangular shaped houses with straw roof in the village of Santana.

COMBO 3 (Sunrise in Bica da Cana + Levada do Alecrim)

The Bica da Cana Viewpoint is located in a more central area of the island and gives us a spectacular view over the Massif Mountain Range, where we find Pico do Areeiro and Pico Ruivo and over the north of the island, especially the São Vicente valley. Here you will find a quiet area to relax while enjoying the sunrise, unlike the Miradouro do Juncal which is a very well-known place, sometimes we have some people there. This location is also used by us for some photo sessions and some filming on the island.

After observing the sunrise, we continue to Rabaçal where we find the Levada do Alecrim, an easy level levada of approximately 7km (round trip). The landscapes over the valleys of Rabaçal and Ribeira da Janela are breathtaking, and it is here that we find the Laurissilva forest that was considered by UNESCO in 1999 as a World Heritage Site.

The route ends at the “Dona Beja” lagoon where you can rest and go for a swim in the clear waters of the lagoon. The return is done by the same route.
