Vereda do Larano – Boca do Risco

Hike the Historic Coastal Path from Machico to Porto da Cruz

The Vereda do Larano walk connects Machico to Porto da Cruz via an old footpath once used by locals for trade. The hike begins at Levada dos Maroços, with an easy walk along the levada flanked by Mimosa trees and agricultural lands. This section offers fantastic views over the city of Machico.

Ascending the trail, you reach the viewpoint of Boca do Risco, where you are greeted with a stunning vista of the Atlantic Ocean, Ponta de São Lourenço, Penha d’Aguia, and, if weather permits, Porto Santo Island. After a short rest, the journey continues along a narrow, vertiginous coastal path towards Porto da Cruz, offering fascinating views and sightings of endemic Madeira flora.

The trail is recommended for experienced hikers, especially as it can be slippery during wetter months. On the way to Porto da Cruz, you’ll encounter one of Madeira’s most iconic rock formations, Penha d’Aguia, perfect for capturing breathtaking photographs.

The hike concludes in the center of Porto da Cruz, where you can visit the famous sugar cane mill. Here, you can observe the extraction of sugar cane juice for making “aguardente” brandy and honey cane, used in traditional honey cake. This hike combines historical significance, natural beauty, and cultural experiences, making it a memorable adventure on Madeira Island.
