Hike Through Madeira’s Most Spectacular Rocky Coastline
The Ponta de São Lourenço hike takes you along Madeira Island’s easternmost peninsula, known for its dramatic, almost deserted coastline. This walk is a stark contrast to the lush Levada paths, making it a unique and popular hike. Classified as a partial natural reserve and part of the European Natura 2000 network, the hike showcases around 140 plant species, with 31 unique to Madeira.
Starting with easy wooden steps and footbridges, the trail soon leads through steep slopes, offering fantastic views of the Deserted Islands to the south and Porto Santo Island to the north, weather permitting. You’ll see both the northern and southern coasts of Madeira along the way.
At the far end of the peninsula is “Cais do Sardinha,” the only shaded spot with palm trees, perfect for a rest. In summer, bring a bathing suit to enjoy the crystal-clear waters. The hike also provides a chance to see planes descending to the airport.
Prepare for varying weather conditions, as the area can be windy and sunny. Bring sun cream, a hat, and water. This hike offers an unforgettable blend of challenging terrain and breathtaking scenery!
