Hike from Achada do Teixeira to Pico Ruivo: Explore Madeira’s Highest Peak
The Achada do Teixeira to Pico Ruivo hike is a must-do adventure for nature enthusiasts visiting Madeira Island. Starting at Achadas do Teixeira, this 6km trail offers a moderately challenging route, easier than starting from Pico do Areeiro. The hike involves an ascent and descent of over 300 meters, taking approximately 3 hours to complete.
This trail is part of the Natura 2000 Network, a European network dedicated to nature conservation. Hikers will enjoy breathtaking views of Madeira’s central mountain range, including Paul da Serra, Encumeada, Pico do Areeiro, and Pico Ruivo. The vegetation along the trail features resilient trees like the centennial Urze (Erica arborea), which withstand strong winds and variable weather conditions.
At the halfway point, hikers reach Pico Ruivo, Madeira’s highest peak at 1862 meters. From here, the panoramic views are simply stunning, offering a sense of walking on clouds—a truly unique and unforgettable experience.
