The “Levadas” are extraordinary irrigation systems built by our ancestors in the 16th century to distribute water from the north coast to the south coast.

Currently, there are around 2500 km of Levadas in Madeira.

What better opportunity to visit our greatest pride, the Laurissilva Forest, considered in 1999 by UNESCO a World Heritage Site, occupying approximately an area of 15,000 hectares, the largest core of this forest.

Ponta de São Lourenço - Full-day (Tuesday)

"Named after the caravel sailed by João Gonçalves Zarco, who upon approaching this piece of land shouted to his ship: São Lourenço, that's enough!"

This walk runs along the eastern peninsula of the Madeira Island, where you can watch a different vegetation from the rest of the island, with a lack of trees and low vegetation, such as the Everlasting (Helichrysum devium Johns) and the Ice Flower (Mezembryanthenmum crystallinum).
The Ponta de São Lourenço is classified as a partial natural reserve and part of the European network of important community sites - Natura 2000.
In this place nests several protected seabirds such as the Cory's Shearwater, the Madeiran Storm-Petrel, the Bulwer’s Petrel and the Common Tern. We can see other bird species such as the Berthelot's Pipit, the Goldfinch and the Canary.
Along the way we are amazed by fantastic sceneries, with the Deserted Islands in the south and the islands of Porto Santo in the north (if the weather permits). From this walk is possible to see the northern and southern coasts of Madeira Island.
When arriving to the end of this path we find the “Casa do Sardinha”, support to the vigilantes of the Natural Park of Madeira.
After a few minutes of rest, we return by the same path.

Levada dos Prazeres - Half-day (wednesday)

"Complete relaxation! An easy and charming walk with beautiful and breathtaking views!"

The Levada dos Prazeres begins in Calheta, on the South coast of Madeira Island.
It is an easy path, where you can find good weather for almost 365 days a year.
This walk is developed in the middle of two forests: The Exotic Forest composed of introduced trees and plants, such as the pine trees and acácias; and part of the Laurissilva Forest, an endemic forest, composed of plants and tree that can only be seen on Madeira Island.
The Laurissilva Forest is a world heritage site by UNESCO since 1999 and is also one of the seven wonders of Portugal.
This walk is very relaxing along the Levada and has the duration of approximately two hours.

Queimadas / Caldeirão Verde Levada walk - Full-day (Thursday)

"Think GREEN, think of fairy tales, of rain forests... of emeralds. This is Caldeirão Verde!"


This walk begins at the Queimadas Forest Park at 980 meters above sea level, in the municipality of Santana, next to a shelter house with thatched roof, seems taken from a fairy tale.
It's inserted in full Laurissilva Forest, where we can enjoy a wide variety of plant species, to highlight the Stinklaurel (Ocotea foetens), the Laurel (Laurus novocanariensis), the Lily-of-the-Valley Tree (Clethra arborea), Common European Elder (Sambucus lanceolata), between others.
The most visible bird species are the Chaffinch, the Firecrest, the Grey Wagtail, the Buzzard and with luck the Long-toed Wood Pigeon. As we walk along the Levada we find ourselves in a green and pleasant landscape,
After passing by 4 natural tunnels, existing along the way, we find the beautiful Caldeirão Verde, an impotent cascade whose water falls in a beautiful lagoon emerald green color.
After appreciating its natural landscape, we go round the same track back to Queimadas Forest Park.

Rabaçal / 25 Fontes - Full-day (Friday)

The Levada Rabaçal begins in Paul da Serra, more precisely in Rabaçal.
From this point we can observe one of the most beautiful valleys of Madeira, the Rabaçal Valley and down to the Forest House of Rabaçal.
We operate in full Laurissilva Forest,, a World Heritage site.
After a few meters of pure beauty we make our first visit to the stunning waterfall of Risco.
After a break in the Risco balcony we follow  our path.
All around you can be dazzled by the green beauty of the forest and the sound of nature, the natural heart of  Madeira Island
We can enjoy a variety of plant species, to highlight the Tree Heather (Erica arborea), Besom Heath (Erica scoparia) and Madeira Bilberry (Vaccinium padifolium).
Among many species of birds, hopefully we can find the Trocaz Pigeon (columba trocaz trocaz) a unique species of Madeira.
In the end we find the 25 Fontes and its beautiful green and fresh lagoon, surrounded by vines and giant ferns.
After appreciate its natural and breathtaking scenery, we go round the same track back.

Levada do Norte - Half-day (Friday)

"Don't leave Madeira Island without seeing the stunning views over the south coast. Be inspired!"

The Levada do Norte is one of the longest and oldest levadas on Madeira Island.
Built Many centuries ago, its main purpose was to carry the water from the North side of Madeira, which was more humid and rainy, to the South side, in order to irrigate the main agricultural lands.
This Levada is perfect for those who wish to do a relaxing and easy walk on their visit to Madeira Island.
For approximately two hours you can enjoy fantastic views of the Atlantic Ocean, the Campanário and Ribeira Brava, and the views over the valley of Ribeira Brava, at the end of the walk, are breathtaking.
Along the walk you can see the famous “Poios Madeirenses”, organized and maintained agricultural lands, where every centimeter is used to plant products that will be grown for the “self-consumption”, as is the case of vegetables, tubers and fruit trees, which due to the mild and tropical climate of Madeira, grow almost all the year.
It is also possible to observe some endemic species of Madeira, almost over a small "spot" of laurels that grow on this site since many years ago.

Levada do Rei - Full-day (Saturday)

"Every breath you take will bond you to the Forest. A true Sanctuary of Nature!"


The Levada do Rei begins in the Water Treatment Station in Quebradas in São Jorge.
This route skirts the valley of São Jorge, where we can observe some herbs and medicinal plants and at the same time learn a little about them.
Initially we will walk in an exotic forest composed by some  introduced flora specimens, where we can observe the fantastic agricultural landscapes of São Jorge and Santana.
After a few minutes, we get inside one of the best preserved areas of the Laurissilva Forest (World Heritage Site by UNESCO since 1999) where we observe a variety of plants, such as the Til (Ocotea foetens), the Laurel (Laurus novocanariensis) and the Madeira Mahogany (Persea indica).
As for bird species, we can highlight the Firecrest and the Chaffinch.
We walk through a waterfall before we finish the first part of our journey, arriving at Ribeiro Bonito, an isolated and with plenty of water site, where you can hear the sounds of nature.
After a few minutes of rest we go round the same track back.

Vereda do Larano - Full-day (Saturday)

"A hike that connects Porto da Cruz to Machico on the north coast of Madeira Island, a walk of contrasts."

This walk connects Machico to Porto da Cruz through an old footpath once used by the local people to move from one place to another to do exchange business.
The walk starts in the Levada dos Maroços, so the first part of the route is easy walking along a levada followed with Mimosa trees and agricultural lands.
After enjoying the fantastic views over Machico city, we go up a trail to reach the viewpoint of Boca do Risco, where a superb view awaits us over the Atlantic Ocean as well as the Ponta de São Lourenço, the Penha d’Aguia and, if the weather permits, The Porto Santo Island. Stunning, don’t you think so?
After a short stop to refresh, we continue our walk towards Porto da Cruz, by a coastal path with fascinating views and where you can observe some endemic specimens of Madeira.
The route is quite narrow and vertiginous, being slippery during the wetter months, that’s why this trail is recommended for people used to walk on the mountain.
On our way to Porto da Cruz you can see one of the most iconic rock formations of Madeira, Penha D'Aguia, prepare your camera for sure you will want to immortalize this moment in a photograph.
After our walk we will stop in the center of Porto da Cruz, here you can see the famous sugar cane mill, where they extract the juice of the sugar cane for the confection of the brandy “aguardente” or of the honey cane that will lead to to our typical honey cake.

The Levada dos Maroços takes you along the valley of Machico, the first city to be discovered in 1419 by Tristão Vaz Teixeira and João Gonçalves Zarco.
Discover the fantastic views over the city of Machico and get to know th famous "Poios Madeirenses" (agricultural terraces).
You may be lucky enough to taste some of the fresh fruit that some farmers sell along the Levada.
